Reverse osmosis filters water by pressing it through a membrane with tiniest holes that retains all larger particles, including bacteria and viruses, heavy metals, and other chemicals, and flushes them away. It produces very pure water that is similar to distilled water. Also, reverse osmosis filters out most volatile compounds such as solvents, which distillation does not do.
